I'm really not sure what I think about this, there's a childlike naivety ( some similarities to Daniel Johnston maybe?) to Greenidge's work, both music and art, and there's no doubting his enthusiasm. But I'm uncomfortable with the thought that there will be an element of those buying the album who will be laughing in a knowing/post modern way at Greenidge.Whereas I wonder if he thinks getting a record deal is his big break? I'd be interested to know what Mordant's intentions were in releasing this. Personally though, despite my 6 year old daughter saying " What's this? It's rubbish?", Mordant are right, the songs do start to work their way under your skin after a few listens. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive about this, buy the CD and make your own minds up, and at least Dennis will have some extra cash to spend in Music & Video Exchange.Monday, 10 December 2007

Hello 'The Rutherford Seance'......this is Mordant Music.......we're very grateful for your recommendations of our recent releases.......on the subject of Dennis Greenidge, we'd like to state categorically that we've released Dennis's music with his best interests at heart.......we aspire totally to his unfettered joyous approach to creativity......he lets nothing obscure his view......with regards to your point about the "element of those buying the album who will be laughing in a knowing/post modern way", this is not really something we can control......that said, if anyone wishes to purchase the album on those grounds, we would actively dissuade them......there is absolutely nothing ironic or 'knowing' whatsoever about our own intentions here......we despise such a notion......Dennis has as much right to have his music released as anyone........he displays a rare ebullient aspect and is astonishingly prolific......he has a keen ear for melody and his pure excitement is plain for all to hear.......and he should be heard......finally, Dennis does not have a record deal as such.......neither do we.......as has been stated on the CD inlay, Dennis will reap all profits from the album.......many thanks for the support.......kind regards......MM
Many thanks for the response Gary, my post wasn't meant as a criticism of Mordant, a label I have a huge amount of respect for. Your enthusiasm for Dennis' music in your reply is as apparent as his own.You are of course right that you can't control people's reasons for buying the CD, however, you've made your motives for releasing it very clear, thank you for that.
The more I've listened to it over the last few days the more I'd reiterate my reccomendation that people buy it.
